Obituary of Margaret Ann Ireland Nagel

The death of Margaret Ann Ireland, widow of Walter Nagel, occurred peacefully at her residence in Saint John, New Brunswick on Saturday, June 30, 2018 at the age of 90. She was the daughter of the late Erskine and Miriam (Armstrong) Ireland. The Winnipeg-born pianist had won international recognition in the 1950’s and 1960’s, and later developed a second career as a radio producer and broadcaster in Toronto and New York. In 1986 Margaret Ann returned to Saint John, a former home, where she actively supported the arts and served on the first New Brunswick Arts Board. Her awards included the Canada 125 Medal and an honourary Doctor of Letters degree from the University of New Brunswick. Her website www.margaretannireland.com provides further information on her accomplishments. She will be missed by: her daughter, Nicola Carter (Jeffrey McInerney) of Saint John; her son Cyrus Carter (Dilek Yakar) of Istanbul, Turkey; her beloved grandchildren, Ben Carter (and son Tallis), David Carter (Evelyne Szaryk), Jessica McInerney and Jennifer Dow (Dale and daughters Destiny and Aleigha), and extended family members Thomas Nagel of New York City, and Andrew Nagel (Katherine) of Rochester, NY. In addition to her parents, Margaret Ann was predeceased by her first husband, Norwood Carter (d. Toronto, 1971) and their son Erskine Ireland Carter (d. Saint John, 1994); as well as her second husband, Walter Nagel (d. Saint John 2004). The family is deeply grateful for the invaluable support of Robin Moore, our family friend and Margaret Ann’s special caregiver. The family is also grateful for the support of all her devoted caregivers, of Extramural Nursing and of granddaughter LPN Jessica who eased Margaret Ann’s last months of life. There will be no public service. Margaret Ann had asked that we listen to Rachmaninoff’s Vocalise Opus 34 No. 14 as we remember her. Margaret Ann’s spirit will live on in our memories and will be forever evoked by the music she so deeply loved. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (506 634-7424). In keeping with Margaret Ann’s wishes, a private interment will take place in Saint John, NB. Online condolences may be placed at www.BrenansFH.com
