Obituary of Rev. Canon James "Jim" W. Golding

The family of the Reverend Canon James Golding is saddened to announce his passing on March 6, 2021 at the Saint John Regional Hospital, following a sudden decline in health. Born on January 9, 1937 in Saint John to the late James Alexander and Beatrice May (Ward) Golding, he was raised by his aunt Margaret Golding and his uncles, Walter and Don Golding. 

Growing up, Jim developed a love of sports, especially basketball and golf, that led to many life-long friendships. Jim often spoke of cherished memories with his basketball team mates and friends on the links at Westfield and Riverside.  

Jim attended Rothesay Collegiate School as a student from 1953 until his graduation in 1956. His time at RCS led Jim to a life of service and the Anglican Church. He went on to study Theology at King’s College, Halifax. Following his ordination, Jim moved to Stanley, NB, as parish priest, but soon returned to Saint John where he served at St. James Church. Jim then went back up the hill to RCS, embarking on a 21-year career as the school chaplain. Fondly known as “The Rev", he influenced a great number of lives as a mentor, teacher, coach, counsellor and friend. Many alumni returned to be married, or to have their children baptized by him in the RCS Chapel. Rothesay Netherwood School honoured Jim in June of 2019 by recognizing him as a Founder. In retirement, he continued as an honourary assistant at St. Paul’s Church in Rothesay, where he shared his gift for ministry.   

Jim was predeceased by his wife, Lynne (Dunham) Golding. Their marriage was characterized by unwavering commitment to one another. Jim and Lynne loved to travel and enjoyed many Caribbean and Pacific Cruises.  

One of Jim’s greatest strengths was resilience. His positive outlook and humour in the face of adversity were defining qualities that will long be remembered. He was loved by many and will be greatly missed. 

Jim is survived by his daughter, Jane Mowatt, son-in-law James Mowatt, grandsons, Ben and John Mowatt, sister, Joanne Belliveau, and his nieces and nephews from the Garland family: Debbie, Kay, Nancy, Eddie, Jim, Peggy, Pat, Reg, Laura and Sandy. He was predeceased by his sister Shirley Garland and his niece Phyllis Keen.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424). In keeping with Jim’s wishes, a memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 18, 2021 at 11 am at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Rothesay.
