Obituary of Hazel Margaret Fowler

Hazel Margaret (Bernard) Fowler passed away peacefully on May 24, 2021 at Carleton Kirk Lodge, with her daughter, Margaret-Ann, at her bedside.

Born in Montreal on March 30, 1930, Hazel was the only child of the late Thomas and Margaret Bernard, who had emigrated from Scotland a few years before her birth. As an only child, she was doted upon and, although the family was not wealthy, by any means; Hazel’s parents made sure that they were always able to pay for her dance lessons, and she was able to study her passion: Ballet. She continued to dance until she was 20 years old and became pregnant and then she taught ballet for a short time afterward. She lived and worked in Montreal until her retirement in 1985, when she relocated to Saint John to be near her only daughter and grandchildren; and she played an active role in their lives.

Hazel is survived by her only daughter, Margaret-Ann McMullin and by her grand-daughters, Shannon Elizabeth and Kristen Ann. She is also survived by her 5 great-grandchildren, Carter, Makenzie Hazel, Michael James, Kobe and Klaire Elizabeth, and by their parents, PJ and Christina Lynch; her godson, Vincent Moseley (Halifax, N.S)  and her Scottish nieces and nephews: Robert Cochrane and his wife Lorraine and children (Glasgow, Scotland), Iain Cochrane (Spain) and children, Pamela Watson and her husband Kim and children (Banchory, Scotland), Jayne Parker and children (London, England) and Susan McDickom and her husband Grant and children (Glasgow).

Her granddaughters called her ‘Nan’ and, as they grew up, their many friends also began to call her ‘Nan’ and many considered her to be their ‘honorary’ grandmother, particularly; Michelle, Melanie and Tasha.

Hazel cultivated many long-time friendships, both in Montreal and in Saint John. Unfortunately, she outlived all of those friends, with the exception of Ms Judy Vail, of Brockway, N.B., whom she originally met in Montreal, but, who, upon her retirement, also moved to New Brunswick. Their friendship has lasted for more than 60 years.

Hazel’s family would like to thank Dr. Ian Grant, Kim Elliott, RN, Kim Brown, RN, Shelley, Barb, Melinda, Sue and Angela and the rest of the staff of the 2nd floor for the wonderful care they provided to Hazel as she made her final journey.  Margaret-Ann especially thanks Dr. Grant, Kim Elliott and the Lodge’s Director of Nursing, Tiffany Justason, for making it possible to allow her to care for her mother in her last days. She will be forever grateful.

Hazel will rest in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Saint John, N.B., alongside her best friend, Dorothy Moseley and her husband, Charles Henry (John) Moseley.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (634-7424) A private family service will take place.
