Obituary of Doreen Smith

With our thanks for God’s gift of a long life well-lived, we grieve for the passing of Doreen Constance Smith (nee Lemmon), which occurred on Monday, June 28th, 2021, peacefully in Saint John, NB at the Loch Lomond Villa.

Doreen is survived by her three children: Barry D. Smith (Frances), Janice B. Chanter (Robert), and Mark G. Smith (Darlene); six grandchildren: Kathryn J., Meaghan J., Jason A., Heather A., Andrew T., and Rebecca H.; 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Right Reverend George C. Lemmon (Lois); sister-in-law Elizabeth Smith; as well as cousins, nephews, and nieces.

Doreen was predeceased in February 2019 by her loving husband of 71 years, David Franklin Smith; and also by her grandson, Ryan T. Smith; and great-granddaughter, Matilda A. Guy.

A graduate of Saint John High School, Doreen’s passions were the raising of her children, her affection for her extended family, and her commitment to God expressed through her long-time association with St. Luke’s Anglican Church.

Doreen grew up and trained as a vocalist, competing in several NB Music Festivals, where she won scholarships in various classes. She was a proud and vibrant leader of church choirs for decades and contributor to charitable ventures led by the church and the City of Saint John, of whom she was proud to be a citizen.

As well as participating in choirs such as Carriden and the Atlantic Symphony Choir, she was a trained organist and choir director. She was the founder and director of the Treble Clef Singers for eight years. Doreen also worked for over 25 years as the funeral organist for Brenan’s Funeral Home once her children had grown.

Doreen’s character and integrity has left a strong impression with her family and friends and will live on through their lives. Doreen set an example for her family by her selflessness and generosity.

Despite her illness of recent years, Doreen was fortunate to live a long life and know and enjoy the comfort and love of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Doreen’s family would like to express their profound appreciation to the staff of Loch Lomond Villa, who provided Doreen with extraordinary care and comfort over her last 9 years as she, with endurance of spirit, was overcome by the insidious effects of Alzheimer’s disease.

Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, (506) 634-7424, where visitation will take place on Sunday July 4, 2021 from 2 to 4 & 6 to 8 pm. The Funeral Service will begin from Brenan’s Chapel on July 5, 2021, at 1:30 pm, with interment to follow at Fernhill Cemetery.
