Obituary of Elizabeth Ann Hogan

It is with appreciation for a life well lived that the family of Elizabth Ann (Betty) Hogan announces her passing, which occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on August 26, 2021. Born on January 21, 1936 in Saint John, N.B., she was a graduate of St. Vincent’s High School and of St. Francis Xavier University.

Betty taught English Literature (Level 1) at St. Vincent’s High School for 34 years, and many of her students acquired a keen and grateful appreciation for the Canadian, American and British legacies to the world of literature. She was an enthusiast of libraries as well, and built up the St. Vincent’s library collection in several areas, the library eventually being named in her honor. Also, in retirement she, together with Sr. O’Neill, SCIC, created the library at Villa Madonna Retreat House with its rich focus on Christian spirituality texts

Over the 1970s-1980s she produced many of the annual musicals at St. Vincent’s High School and was the longstanding Faculty Advisor for the Student Council, which included organizing many of the Student Fund Raisers, and arranging many of the details for the Annual Student Awards. She thoroughly enjoyed the students and all their inspiration.

In retirement, she spent a number of years digitalizing several decades of the marriage records for the Diocese of Saint John (from 1920 onward) and assisted various other Cathedral activities, notably as RCIA Leader, Scheduler, Lector, Parish Council Member, Choir Member and otherwise.

Betty was pre-deceased by her parents, Patrick Joseph and Mary Elizabeth (McCarthy) Hogan. She is survived by her siblings Connie Rankin (Burlington, ON), Dr. John T. Hogan (Saint John) and Dr. Mary Patricia Hogan (Saint John), several cousins, nieces and nephews.

The family thanks Drs. Will O’Brien, Eyal Lebovich, and Chris O’Brien for their kindness and their professional care and interventions. A sincere thank you to Lucy Burditts and Nedda Asgharzadeh (Senior Watch) for their faithful and skillful support.

Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, N.B. (634-7424), a visitation will take place on Tuesday, August 31, 2021 from 2PM – 7 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, September 1, 2021 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Saint John at 12:10 PM. A private family internment will take place at a later date at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Donations in Betty’s memory may be made to the Cathedral Restoration Fund or to Development and Peace.
