The family of Joyce Crosby of Rothesay announce her death.  She was the wife of the late James M. Crosby Sr.  Her death occurred on Wednesday, December 29, 2021 at the Saint John Regional Hospital.  Born on December 10, 1922 in St. John’s, NL, Joyce was the daughter of the late Walter and Mary (Joyce) Smallwood.  Not only was her life significant because of its longevity but also it was one that was well lived.

Joyce will be lovingly remembered by her children, Margaret Crosby of Rothesay, Mary Hare of Truro, NS, James M. Crosby Jr. (Joy) of Rothesay, Jane Canning of St. John’s, NL and Carrie MacLennan (Bernard) of Truro, NS, 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband Jim, Joyce was predeceased by her two brothers, Fred Smallwood of Newfoundland and Howard Smallwood of England.

Joyce for the most part of her youth grew up in Newfoundland.  She graduated from Bishop Spencer School in St John’s and prior to that spent one year at Mount Allison School for Girls in Sackville, NB.  She met her husband during World War II while he was stationed at Cape Spear, NL.  They were married in St John’s.  Throughout her life Joyce continued to make many visits to Newfoundland keeping in touch with her friends and family.

In 1946 Joyce and Jim built a house in the heart of the village of Rothesay.  This house for the past 75 years has been Joyce’s residence, a home with lots of wonderful memories.

For many years Joyce served as Board Chairman of the Crosby Molasses Company. It was important to her that the family business continue to operate and remain in Saint John.  She was a long standing member of St. Paul’s Church in Rothesay and participated in many church groups.  Joyce had a great love of sports.  She was a top notch tennis player and as an older athlete she excelled in bowling,

Joyce was known for her knitting ability and as well for her prowess at the bridge table.

Joyce derived great pleasure from both her extensive world-wide travel to far off places as well interesting destinations much closer to home.  Mum had a special place near and dear to her heart on the sea at New River Beach.

Joyce was a great supporter of local charities and for those who wish, remembrances may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
