Obituary of Harvey Lewis Coates

The family of Harvey Coates of Saint John, cherished husband of Shirley (Joyce) Coates, announce his passing which occurred on Tuesday, November 28, 2023 at the Saint John Regional Hospital.  Born on June 25, 1941 in Botwood, Newfoundland, he was a son of the late Harry and Ivy (Francis) Coates.

Prior to retiring, Harvey was employed as an ironworker at Point Lepreau.  He was a skilled card player and was always up for a good game of cards with his buddies.  Harvey enjoyed hockey and was famous for cheering on his grandchildren at the rink.  He also loved sitting around the bonfire at Rockwood, chatting and laughing the night away with family and friends. He will be deeply missed.

In addition to his loving wife of 52 years, Shirley, Harvey will be greatly missed by his children, Brenda Melanson (Bill), Shawn Coates (Tina), Rosanne Coates, Richard “Blake” Coates, Mary-Ann Foley and Daniel Coates (Michelle); brothers, Owen Coates (Gillian) and Tom Coates (Gail); precious grandchildren, Sarah, Ashley, Brent, Morgan, Mason and Benjamin, several great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.  Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Raymond and sisters, Rose and Marie. 

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506-634-7424) where visitation will take place on Friday, December 1, 2023 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from Holy Redeemer Parish (St. Pius X Church), 316 Somerset Street, Saint John on Saturday, December 2, 2023 at 1:00 PM.
