Obituary of Heather Florence Hatfield

Hatfield, Heather Florence

Heather Florence Hatfield (nee MacDonald), wife of Leroy Hatfield, “got away”, as she would say, on January 28th, 2024. She passed without fear and resting comfortably at the Saint John Regional Hospital.

Born on November 4th, 1949, in Saint John, New Brunswick, Heather was the proud daughter of Angus (Sonny) MacDonald and Sylvia MacDonald (nee Strickland).

Heather is survived by her husband and partner of 57 years, Leroy, her children Bonnie Hatfield (Robert), Erin Hatfield (Jeff) and Cal Hatfield (Ashley), siblings Bonnie Charette (Charles), Bruce MacDonald and Ross MacDonald, grandsons Cole Hatfield and Carson Craft, fur grand puppy Eddy, several grand cats, niece Heather Murphy, nephews Michael MacDonald and Blair MacDonald and her treasured friend of more than 40 years, Margot Doyle.

She was predeceased by her parents and brothers Albert and Clyde MacDonald.

Heather’s was a life well lived. She had a great spirit and a deep and unwavering faith. She exuded strength, joy and embraced life. When it comes to Heather, there are so many stories to tell, both true and sometimes tall. She was an excellent example of how to both serve and live a life of faith, all the while having a lot of fun and bringing joy to those around her.

Heather lived a life of service to her family, her church and her community. Her volunteer activities are too numerous to list and included serving on the board at the Church of St. John & St. Stephen Home, as treasurer and an elder at the Church of St. John & St. Stephen, on the Kirk Session at Grace Presbyterian Church and the Saint John Regional Hospital Auxiliary. She worked all manner of jobs, including as a lifeguard, teacher, accountant, ambulance administrator, outrider at Exhibition Park Raceway and the proprietor of Heather’s Red Hot canteen at Hammond River Raceway. But most significantly, along with her husband, she ran D. Hatfield Ltd. for nearly 50 years.

Above all else, Heather was a devoted wife and exceptional mother and friend. In recent years, she took immense joy in her role as a grandmother and packed a lifetime of love for Cole into 3 years and 8 months, taking every opportunity she had for sleepovers, play dates, reading books and snuggles.

Visitation will occur at Grace Presbyterian Church, 101 Coburg Street, Saint John, on Thursday, February 1st, 2024, beginning at 10a.m., followed by a service at 11a.m. For those unable to attend in person, the service will be livestreamed via the Funeral Home website.

Donations may be made to Grace Presbyterian Church or the Church of St. John & St. Stephen Home and will be deeply appreciated by the family. Arrangements entrusted to Brenan’s Funeral Home (506-634-7424), online condolences and memories may be shared at www.BrenansFH.com.
