Obituary of Carl Arthur Sherwood

Carl Sherwood of Rothesay, passed away peacefully at Rocmaura Nursing Home at the age of 79 on May 4, 2024.  Carl was the husband of Marcia Sherwood (Floyd).  Born in Saint John on November 11, 1944, Carl was the son of Otty and Eve Sherwood.

He is survived by his wife Marcia Sherwood, sister Audrey Sherwood (Alex McElwee) and three children:  Jeff Sherwood (Kelly Decourcey) in Quispamsis, Kelly Sherwood (Eric Martyn) in Halifax and Candace Sherwood (Denis Binette) in Ottawa, as well as seven grandchildren:  Owen, Nate, Luc, Parker, Zoe, Capri and Beau.

Growing up in Saint John, Carl loved cars and racing from an early age.  Soap box derby on Cranston Avenue turned into his first hot rod, a 1938 Ford coupe, at the age of 14 and many more along the way.

After high school, Carl went away to university, but he had met the love of his life before leaving Saint John and it wasn’t long before he was back, planning a wedding and buying a little red farmhouse on Gondola Point Road to fix up and share with Marcia.

Carl was a navigator and a builder.  He always focused on doing a job with excellence and an eye for detail, from fine finish carpentry, perfectly stacking logs in the fire, building rock retaining walls at the lake, to business building and always being available as a sounding board with thoughtful advice shared with family and countless Realtors and business partners over the years.

Carl came from a long line of Realtors, learning from his grandfather and father before him, and had a successful 40 year career in real estate.  He played a pivotal role in local organized real estate and had a life-long passion for the profession and the people he worked with.  Over the years, Carl served as President of the New Brunswick Real Estate Association, President of the Saint John Real Estate Board, Board of Directors of the Canadian Real Estate Association and was the recipient of the Dave Hawkins Award which bestows a lifetime honorary membership with the New Brunswick Real Estate Association.

Carl was a builder of houses, great stories, speeches and toasts, relationships and community in Saint John.  He was a navigator of discussions, real estate policy and business ownership.  He was a navigator of cities, towns, backroads, hiking trails and waterways.  He intuitively knew how to find his way around any city, whether he had been there or not and with Marcia, he built the most amazing family adventures.

Adventuring with friends and family was a lifelong passion expressed through travel, sailing and boating on the Saint John River and abroad.  Carl held their Washademoak lake house close to his heart, where he put his many talents to work creating a place to gather for the people he loved.

The son of a moose hunter, Carl learned how to navigate the woods and how to call a moose.  We will never know if his impressive antics with the birchbark moosehorn ever really called a moose, but they were put to good use every Thanksgiving when he demonstrated his talents with flourish for family and friends.  These are memories his family will cherish forever.

Our heartfelt thanks to the kind and loving caregivers at Rocmaura Nursing Home in Saint John for their compassionate care of Carl during his time there.  He was well loved.

Visitation will be from 2:00-7:00 pm on Thursday, May 9, at Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506-634-7424).
